Don't Sleep on
THIS Vocal Warm-up Before Court

You wouldn’t run a race without stretching first, right? Well, the same goes for your voice. Whether you’re delivering an opening statement, cross-examining a witness, or making your closing argument, your voice needs to be agile, strong, and free of tension. And that requires a warm-up.

But don’t worry—you don’t need a full workout routine. No need to hit the gym, work in Zone 2, or bench your 1 rep max. Just a few simple movements and vocal releases can make all the difference in your clarity, projection, and confidence.

Step 1: Loosen Up Your Body

Your voice doesn’t exist in isolation. It’s part of your entire physical presence, and tension anywhere in your body can restrict vocal freedom.

Start with a few simple movements:

Light torso bends – Gently stretch side to side to release any stiffness in your back and ribs.

Reach for the sky – Extend your arms overhead, lengthening your spine and opening up your ribcage.

Loosen up your neck – Slowly turn your head from side to side. Then let your ear get heavy and drop it to your shoulder. Then the other side; letting go of tension in your shoulders and jaw.

Step 2: Yawn & Sigh—The Magic Combo

Now, here’s the game-changer: YAWN.

Yes, a big, exaggerated yawn. Mouth wide, full stretch.

Let your voice ride along naturally, then add a sigh—start with a high pitch and let it slide down into a breathy exhale.

No need to make it pretty. You’re not aiming for a concert performance; you’re simply releasing tension and setting your voice up for its best performance.

Why This Works:

✔️ Opens your throat → More space for resonance, meaning a fuller, richer sound.

✔️ Relaxes your jaw → Releases unnecessary tension that can tighten and strain your voice.

✔️ Encourages deep breathing → Engages your chest, ribs, and core, giving your voice power and endurance.

✔️ Connects breath and voice → Helps activate your full vocal range, so it's accessible when you're ready to make your speech more dynamic and engaging.

Make It a Habit

Find a quick moment before court, a deposition, or even a client meeting.

Your car, your office, even the bathroom stall—wherever you can, steal a moment to prep your voice.

If you fake a yawn, a real one will likely follow, so don’t hold back. (Side note: Just TALKING about yawning has made me a yawning fool. They truly ARE contagious.)

Warm up like a pro, and you’ll feel the difference in your delivery. Ready to bring more control, confidence, and presence to your voice? Start with a simple yawn and sigh—and let your best voice lead the way.
