Your Voice Needs More Melody—Here’s Why

I tell my clients I’m going to help them become the next Broadway star on the courtroom stage.

Ooh, you should see the fear in their eyes. Hahah!

Of course, I’m just messing with them. No one is going to make you sing in court (at least I hope not—please tell me if you’ve ever been asked to sing your opening statement).

But here’s the deal…

You do have to make your voice more tuneful.

The Problem with a Monotone Voice

Flat, monotone speech is a surefire way to lose your audience’s attention.

And I know—your case is serious. You’re dealing with real stakes, real consequences. But if your voice drones on without variation, jurors will tune you out—even when what you’re saying is critically important.

Your voice needs melody to keep them engaged and guide them through your argument.

Break Monotony with Vocal Melody

Think about how songs move:

🎵 Notes rise to build energy

🎵 Notes fall to create resolution

Your speech should do the same.

Raise your pitch on key points to signal importance.

Lower your pitch when you’re landing a conclusion.

Vary your tone to reflect the emotion behind your words.

This natural vocal variety does two things:

1️⃣ It keeps jurors listening (because their brains love contrast).

2️⃣ It creates an auditory roadmap, making it easier for them to follow and retain your argument.

Your Voice Is an Instrument—Use It Well

Try adding just a little melody to your speech—like the natural rise and fall you use when telling a great story to a friend.

You don’t have to be a Broadway star to make your voice compelling.

Give it a shot, and let me know how it goes. Or, if you need help, you know where to find me. 😉
