Let It Breathe: Using Silence to Amplify Your Message

Silence is more than just the absence of noise.

It is the breeding ground for thoughts to form, for cognitive connections, for emotional responsiveness, and for deeper relatedness.

There is a LOT that happens in the pause.

Growing up in music, I learned early on how powerful the rests are. As a singer, I would find myself desperately looking for a rest, even a small one, so I could take a breath. Rests were a necessity.

But rests were not just functional, they were artistic.

Rests in music are just as much a part of the musical experience and expression as the notes. Notes are not better than rests, just as sound is not better than silence.

Each leans on the other to give themselves more meaning.

As a public speaker, learning how to strategically use silence will make your message exponentially more impactful.

Thoughtful pauses during public speaking allow your audience to absorb information, creating moments of reflection and emphasis.

We need the silence to let our brains process the information we received and decide where to organize it internally. Is this brand new? Does it relate to something else I know? Do I have any experience in this? Do I have an opinion about this? Is there an action I need to take?

Inner processing happens in the silence.

Additionally, silence is a powerful tool for building anticipation, underscoring key points, and fostering a deeper connection with your listeners.

Just like in music, the combination of sound and silence creates a rhythm that enhances the listener's ability to truly hear your content.

Be disciplined to incorporate intentional pauses for enhancing the rhythm of learning and impact of your speech.
